Nothing to Sneeze At: Black Pepper for Healthy Weight

This article made me laugh because of how much my boyfriend loves pepper on almost anything we cook 🙂 Who knew the whole time he had a key to maintaining a healthy weight because of his love for pepper.  I’m gonna have to follow his lead and add a little extra pepper to my meals after reading this article.  Leave a comment and let me know what you think.

People want to maintain a healthy weight, and there are lots of beneficial ways to do it: exercise, whole foods diet and supplementation, proper stress relief, regular sleeping patterns. But a new study has highlighted an ancient ingredient for healthy fat metabolism that is, quite literally, right under our noses—black pepper.

Published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, the study zeroes in on piperine, the component that makes pepper spicy. Black pepper has been used for centuries by Eastern practitioners to address numerous areas of health, particularly the digestive system. This ancient spice has also been known to support healthy fat metabolism. But nobody knew exactly why— until now.

Our bodies use blood glucose for energy; however, excess glucose is converted into fat, and there are a number of genes that control this process. Researchers found that piperine in black pepper reduces the expression of these genes: in other words, it turns many of these genes down or shuts them off completely. In addition, pepper turns up biological processes that promote healthy weight, by allowing the body to metabolize fat more efficiently.

Woman loses 85 lbs by Becoming a Vegetarian

As a Vegetarian I love to hear success stories of how people not only lost weight, but chose a healthier lifestyle by cutting meats out of their diets.  Sandra, is not a vegetarian, she’s  a pescatarian, but she did cut most meats out of her life and looks great as a result. For those who don’t know, Pescatarians are people who eat seafood as their meat source, but eat mostly fruits and vegetables around that.   A Vegetarian considers anything with eyes meat, so we don’t eat fish either.  I’m happy that Sandra clarified this in her own story because it always wears me out when folks are like “i’m a vegetarian” as they eat turkey.  I’m like since when is turkey a veggie ?!

In the article Sandra says that you need to take a multivitamin and eat tofu to get the protein you are missing by not eating meat. That is NOT true.  You should be taking a multivitamin whether you eat meat or not because the food supply is so tainted these days that you need to replenish what a lot of companies like Monsanto have stripped from the food in general.  As far as Tofu goes, it’s fine in small doses, but studies have shown that too much tofu (soy) can lead to forms of breast cancer.  To make sure you get your protein eat the right amounts of greens and beans in place of meat when you go vegetarian.

Sandra Nunez-Simms Lost 85 lbs By Becoming a Vegetarian

Today, we’re doing our very first veggie diaries with Sandra Nunez-Simms, one of our Thank God I’m Natural Facebook fans who lost 85 pounds when she switched to a plant based diet.  The goal of our veggie diaries are to highlight people who have become vegetarians, vegans, or opted to just go meatless every once in a while.  There have been several studies that have shown that a diet high in animal protein is causally linked to cancer and other ailments like heart disease and diabetes. It’s time to start taking better care of our ourselves, and the first step in that process is learning as much as we can about our how diet affects our bodies. Please don’t be overwhelmed, because we’re here to help.  Let’s take this journey to healthy living together. 

1.  Why did you give up meat?
Deciding to give up meat has been one of the easiest choices of my life.  Becoming a vegetarian has changed me.  I decided to give up meat because I was never a big meat eater.  My meat of choice has always been either chicken or turkey or occasionally beef .  After doing a lifestyle change on my eating habits, I realized that my diet seriously lacked vegetables.  I ate them occassionally but surely not with every meal.  Giving up meat was a way for me to incorporate more vegetables and live a healthier-greenier life.  Also, the idea of putting a face to my food kinda weirded me out.

2.  How long have you been a vegetarian, vegan, raw foodist, flexetairan?

I’ve been a vegetarian for almost three years.  I also define myself as a pescatarian as I do eat some seafood.

Allergic reactions to Black Henna

OMG when I saw this article I couldn’t believe it ! This actually happened to me in the late 90s.  I got a black henna tattoo done on my hand and was in love with it on the first day.  The next day however I woke up with a swollen design on my hand in the shape of the design that I had done.  I tried a bunch of things to heal it and nothing worked, until, my mother suggested aloe vera gel directly from the plant at her house. The aloe vera gel worked ! my hand was healed within one week.

I went years afraid of using henna because of that experience until i went to a spa party 2 yrs ago where they had a henna artist doing tattoos.  She explained to me the natural henna is not going to be black.  It will be more of a brown, yellow or red tone.  So I took her work for it and ventured out on my second henna tattoo. I’m excited to say that her tattoo work did not give me an allergic reaction ! Her natural henna lasted on my hand for about a week and I got compliments the whole time I had it 🙂

So there’s no need to be afraid of natural henna, but stay away from the black henna which can cause break outs.  Read the article below and let me know what you think.

Most black henna contains more than five times the permitted levels of chemicals, experts warn.  A maximum 6 per cent concentration of p-Phenylenediamine (PPD) is permitted in products in the UAE.

But Khalifa Al Romaithi, the director of public health at Abu Dhabi Municipality, said the concentration of PPD in most black henna was “more than 30 per cent”.

PPD has not been approved for use on the skin by the EU or the US Food and Drug Administration. A study by the US Department of Health and Human Services in April last year found that PPD has “potent skin-sensitising properties”.

Farming To Fight Black Obesity

This is a great article & video on urban farming.  My family belongs to a food Co Op in Atlanta,GA so we know the importance of healthy eating and living.  You should definitely support Will Allen if you live in the Milwaukee, WI area. In 1920, African-Americans operated more than 900,000 farms across the nation. Today, there are only about 18,000 Black farmers. One person who hopes to change that number is Will Allen (pictured below), who is the co-author of the newly released book, “The Good Food Revolution: Growing Healthy Food, People, and Communities”.

A farmer himself, Allen says tilling the land to grow healthy foods is one way to combat the obesity problem among African Americans, and he hopes to inspire more people to trade in their designer garb and corner offices for overalls and a plot of land to grow fresh produce in urban areas. He made the move nearly two decades ago.

In 1993, he cashed out a small retirement package from his sales position at Procter & Gamble and purchased a plot of land filled with dilapidated greenhouses not too far from Milwaukee’s largest public housing project. Since then, he has developed one of the nation’s preeminent urban farms on a little less than two acres of lands.

Relaxers Linked To Fibroids

Being that our skin is the largest organ on our bodies it make sense that putting something as harmful as a relaxer on your scalp would cause internal damage to your body as well.  There have been many studies over the years speaking on the damage that relaxer do to your hair but this one is especially scary.  Is looking “cute” really worth risking your life ?!  If you’re already natural good for you, but if you read this and currently have a relaxer I would stop putting that in your scalp right away.  Leave a comment and let me know what you think.

A new study in the American Journal of Epidemiology has linked hair relaxers to uterine fibroids, as well as early puberty in young girls.

Scientists followed more than 23,000 pre-menopausal Black American women from 1997 to 2009 and found that the two- to three-times higher rate of fibroids among black women may be linked to chemical exposure through scalp lesions and burns resulting from relaxers.

Women who got their first menstrual period before the age of 10 were also more likely to have uterine fibroids, and early menstruation may result from hair products black girls are using, according to a separate study published in the Annals of Epidemiology last summer.

More African-American women use yoga for health problems

All across Arizona, women of all ages, backgrounds and body types are using yoga’s best stretching exercises, meditation techniques and self-healing methods to improve their well-being. In particular, more African-Americans are turning to the holistic regimen than ever before.

It’s little wonder, really – after all, a 2008 survey conducted by the Yoga Journal found that 49 percent of people use yoga to get healthy, compared to 2003, when just 5 percent reported doing yoga for that reason.

However, in terms of maintaining a healthy body, there is a new sense of urgency among African-American women. According to Kaiser Health News, one-half of this group is obese, compared to 30 percent among all women.

Certainly Pricey, But Not So Healthy

I learned early bout soy milk not being as healthy as it claimed to be.  Almond milk is the healthiest alternative to cow milk.  And i’ve never been big on consuming diet versions of anything versus the regular version because diet anything usually means a bunch of cancer inducing sugar substitutes.  Below is a really good article on what “healthy” tricks you should look out for.  Leave a comment and let me know what you think.

You thought you were being health-conscious when you bought that granola bar and drank that soy milk, didn’t you? Turns out, you may have been wrong. In a perfect example of how you can’t trust marketing claims that this product is good for you or that product has less fat, Forbes examines some of the top healthy alternatives we think we’re making every day.

Soy milk may brag that it’s the healthy alternative to regular fat-free and reduced fat milk, but its hiding some scary details. According to New York dietitian Robin Barrie Kaiden, “half the time it’s flavored and it has added sugar.” Soy milk is also genetically modified and no one yet knows what damage that may cause later in life. So for about $90 more a year, soy milk buyers are getting a product with higher calories and with more risk factors.

Another outrageously priced product is organic peanut butter. No matter how you spread it, peanut butter is still peanut butter and it’s high in fat. It’s best to stick with the cheaper version or if you’d like to be healthier, experiment with fat-free cream cheese. You might find that a cream cheese and jelly sandwich taste just as good.

Eat the right foods for natural, glossy hair

Natural hair care products are great for producing beautiful, glossy locks – but it’s also important to make sure you eat the right foods, says an expert.

Nutritionist and author Suzi Grant told the Mypure website that there are certain essential vitamins and minerals we need to help our hair look great.

She says omega 3, which comes from oily fish, is great for your hair, skin and hormones.

Warning: “Natural” Breakfast Cereal May Be Hazardous To Your Health

My Blog is not just about natural hair.  It’s also about healthy living overall when possible.  This video opened my eyes to the trickery of labeling going on in the healthy food sections of a lot of stores.  I try to shop as healthy as possible since i’m a vegetarian, but this video let me know that even more label reading needs to start happening on my trips to the store.  Watch the video and let me know what you think.
