Because our hair is precious to us, many of us would much rather use natural means to color it, than harmful, commercial means that would damage our hair. Many commercial products generate negative side effects such as hair loss, burning, itching, redness, itchy or raw skin, swelling in the face, and trouble breathing, and should be avoided at all costs. Fortunately, there are herbal recipes that can help us achieve the desired results that we wish, without the annoying chemicals.
It must be noted that these natural products are not without side effects. In fact, you may experience the same, discomforting sensations from the natural hair dyes that you would from the chemical versions. When in doubt, leave it out! If you feel that you will have an allergic reaction after using these herbs in your hair, do not proceed any further until a medical professional has alleviated your fears. Also make sure that your herbs are authentic. There are many false imitations of henna, for instance, that are harmful.
To begin, test and see whether the herb recipes will give your hair the desired effect. This can be done by trimming off a bit of hair and applying the recipes to that portion. If your hair color reacts unfavorably with the recipe, then you should forgo using the treatment. One thing that you should understand before this process is that herbal dyes are usually “progressive dyes” and only manage to enhance or change the hair in subtle ways. Still, you do not want to give herbs the benefit of the doubt, only to wake up the next morning with orange hair!
To lighten your hair, you may want to consider using lemon juice. Take juice from 2 lemons and strain that in 1 quart of water. Shampoo your hair, prior to using, and add the mixture to dried hair. For peak results, dry your hair in the sun.
Use henna if you would like to get an auburn look. Henna is a considerably healthy herb, known for thickening the hair. Because of its strong properties, it is wise to use henna with a lighter herb like chamomile. First, take 2 parts of henna and 1 part of chamomile powder and mix them in a nonmetal bowl with bowling water so that the mixture becomes pasty. When the paste is lukewarm, use gloves to apply the mixture to your hair. Then tie a plastic bag over your hair and wrap it with a towel for 30 minutes to 2 hours so that the henna mixture will work better. Rinse out your hair and let it air dry in the sun.
If you are concerned about gray hair, you should use a sage rinse. Boil a half cup or so of the herb in water and strain it. After the substance cools, you can pour it through dried, shampooed hair 15 times and then let rinse it in cool water. Sage is a progressive dye, so this process should be repeated weekly until you get the results you want. You should then proceed to repeating the process every month to maintain the desired color.
