Method Man Doesn’t Like Natural Hair

Method Man Doesn’t Like Natural Hair

So as I get my  twitter fix for the day, I’m seeing all these post about Method Man dissing black women who wear their hair natural. In my mind I don’t want to believe it because I’m a HUGE Wu Tang fan. Especially Method Man.  And considering how many shows of theirs I’ve been to, I can tell you that more than 50% of the women supporting the shows wear their hair natural, be it braids, locs, afros, 2 strand twist etc.  So i was a little stunned that he would say ;

“No. I don’t like peasy afros, sorry. I don’t like dreads either. I like a woman to get her hair did.

Like women with natural hair don’t go to the salon or have a stylist who does their hair for them.  Like all afros are so called “peasy” , as if peasy or nappy is a bad thing.  And don’t get me started on “dreads” !  The fact that people think that not frying your hair with a perm means it’s not “did” or done is just more of that good ole willie lynch brainwashing being passed down. And no matter how concious he claims to be, a part of him is still falling for old stereo types and self hate issues.

Now mind you, we are talking about Method Man, so 9 out of 10 times the fool was high on something when he said it, which doesn’t excuse his put down at all, but makes me want to think this was high Method Man and not sober Clifford speaking. In the 90s on more than one occasion my friends and I had close encounters with him in Atlanta and he was so nice and respectful to us & almost all of us were wearing locs at the time.

I would love to show you the video of him making the statement, but it has been snatched off the internet faster than the video of beyonce falling in concert was. And we all know how quickly that was taken down lol 🙂

Anyway, I’m hoping the video was snatched down because sober Clifford and not high Method Man, realized how hurtful that statement could be to his fans and his pockets.  I don’t expect all men to love natural hair, hell he doesn’t have to love it either. But when a large portion of your income is coming is from the very people you are putting down, you should def rephrase what your preferences are in a kinder way.

Needles to say, I won’t be running to buy tickets for the next show he does in Atlanta or his next CD for that matter.  I’ll spend that money keeping my locs long, healthy & beautiful 😉 Leave a comment and let me know what you think. Peace 🙂

  1. My spouse and I stumbled over here different web address and thought I might as well check things out.
    I like what I see so now i am following you.

    Look forward to exploring your web page yet again.

  2. I am a huge Wu Tang fan & even bigger Meth fan & I had the chance to meet him in real life & he was cool as a polar bears toe nail. I wouldn’t even believe it if it weren’t for the fact that so many men (& woman) feel this way. I believe “to each his own”, only thing is we have such a negative concept when it comes to judging each other. If they would just say, I like the polished look of perms. That would be cool, but we usually hear, stinky, dirty, unkempt, ugly… All I can do is SMH.

  3. I’m with Sheri! It’s Method Man, who cares! KMSL!! ;-P
    Besides, doesn’t he make his living promoting negative stereotypes of Black men or Black people period? Idiocy is the only reason we even know his name!

  4. This is so sad. Black Women are the only women in the world who are judged as”unkept” or negatively when they wear their hair as God made it. Well I for one am SO DONE with Black Men who do not know the value of a Black woman who is proud of her own body…Good riddance Method Man

  5. Method Man is stuck in the 90’s. My dad hates it when I do a tight braid out, he hates the texture. 2 old school men stuck in a time when having straight hair was the only way a black woman could be respected.

  6. Shameful but true… Many African Americans feel the same about natural hair whether male or female and that is due to cultural brainwashing. Many have never read “HAIRSTORY” or even sat and talked with a woman about why she returned to her natural roots in the first place. This was a truly ignorant statement for him to make but am I offended? Nope….my hair is for me to love and going natural was one of my best lifetime decisions.

  7. A damn shame. There is no way way out from under this truth: black women or men who refuse to accept natural hair have a problem with accepting themselves as God intended. Now I believe this is different from those who will “rock a ‘fro” or try their hair out natural and then go back to straightening because at least they let their natural hair come out and play and they “own it”. Personally, I’ve worn locks for the past 7 years and will continue to keep my hair natural for the forseeable future and I’m very very happy to be honest with myself and free of the brain-washing. I find my hair beautiful and am very proud of the God-given me…shining it out for all to see!! 😀
